Top 10 Safest and Affordable cars in India 2020

Global NCAP has been the genesis of India's automotive safety movement released in 2014 the results of 5 made in India cars brought the subject of Automotive safety in sight od many people and there has been progressing since. Automotive Research Association Of India has stipulated far more crash test norms and carmakers have started making their products safer and also the buyers simply want a safer car for their family and themselves. A point to note that vehicle safety is a wast subject that includes visibility to high tech electronics but Global NCAP ratings are derived from a series of crash test results. It also depends on the level of protection a car will provide in different scenarios like head-on collisions, rollover, or impact from any direction. The global NCAP test protocol is also quite different from the Indian regulatory authorities so it's possible for a car to be road legal yet score poorly on a Global NCAP test. There are however some cars that performed marvelously.

1) Mahindra XUV 300:-

The car that top's the list for being the safest and most affordable car in India is the Mahindra XUV-300, based on the Ssangyong Tivoli which is a 4-star EURO NCAP car the XUV-300 scored highest in both adult and child occupant protection. The XUV300 bodyshell was found to be stable and protection to front occupants was rated good. This car also met the requirements for side-impact protection rated 4-Star is impressive as they prevented excessive movement on impact.

2) Tata Altroz

On the second step of the podium, we have the all-new Tata Altroz. The Altroz 5-star rating bodes well for Tata's new alpha platform which will form the whole range of cars to come. Global NCAP noted adequate to good protection for the front seat occupants in case of an impact and also found that the body shell is capable of withstanding more load. Altroz also passed the side impact test which you can see in the result above. Child occupant protection was rated 3-star and ISOFIX are standard fit through the 3-year-old dummy's head making contact with the interior of the car was an area of concern.

3) Tata Nexon:-

In 3rd Place, we have another Tata the Nexon which was the First-ever Indian car to be rated 5-stars by Global NCAP interestingly the Nexon was originally rated 4-stars  on the basis of its first crash test. The Five stars rating was derived from the second round of tests that include a side-impact test. The Nexon used in the second round of tests also featured safety upgrades like the inclusion of a seatbelt reminder system explaining why the five-star rating is only applicable to Nexon build after 7th December 2018. The Nexon was found to provide impressive protection to both front and rear occupants.

4) Honda Amaze:-

Second-gen Honda Amaze comes in the 4th position, tested for Global NCAP safer cars for Africa campaign the made in India amaze was rated 4-stars on adult occupant protection. The Amaze body shell was found to be capable of withstanding a further load while the foot-well area was found to be stable however the protection for the front occupant knees was found to be marginal. Disappointedly the amaze was rated only 1 star on child occupant protection and that's despite ISOFIX being standard, the child can get serious injuries and multiple fractures on sensitive body parts.

5) Mahindra Marazzo:-

Coming in at fifth place we have the Mahindra Marazzo that holds the distinction of being the best rated of the MPV's tested by the Global NCAP so far. The Marazzo body shell was found to be stable and capable of withstanding more load though protection for the driver's legs and chest were rated marginal. The Marazzo gets ISOFIX child seat mounts as standard but was rated 2-stars on child protection losing points for the excessive forward movement of the 3-year-old child seat with risk of head injuries.

6) Volkswagen Polo:-

The Volkswagen polo might be the oldest car on the list but its four-star rating is good enough for 6th place even today. The tough body shell was highlighted and found to stable enough to withstand more load. Adult occupant protection was rated good though there is a possibility of knee injuries resulting from contact with the dashboard. The polo was rated 3-stars on child protection despite no ISOFIX. The child seat for both 3 years old and 18 months old dummies prevented excessive movement in an impact.

7) Tata Tigor/Tiago:-

In Joint 7th place we have the Tata siblings Tiago and Tigor. The facelifted models were tested earlier this year and were rated four stars for adult occupant protection, while head and neck protection were found to be good, marginal protection to the driver's chest and knees, a week footwell, and an unstable body are points of concern. Both Tata's don't get ISOFIX child seat mounts but even so the crash test found adequate protection to both 3 years and 18-month dummies earning the Tata's 3-star rating for child occupation.

8) Maruti Vitara Breeza:-

In 8th place, we have the Maruti Vitara Brezza, given the sheer volume in which the Brezza sells is reassuring to know its a four-star rated car while protection to the driver's chest and knees was rated marginal the body shell was found to be stable and capable of withstanding further load. The Brezza isn't quite impressive in terms of child occupant protection with just a 2-star rating. ISOFIX is standard fit but the front-facing position of the 18-month child restraint system means poor protection for the head and limited protection for the chest.

9) Hyundai Elite i20:-

Coming in the 9th place is Hyundai's Elite i2, tested as Global NCAP safer cars for Africa campaign the made in India i-20 was rated 3 Stars on adult protection. Notably, while top versions of the i-20 get  6 airbags and ISOFIX child seat mounts the bade i-20 with dual airbags was used for this test in line with the global NCAP Protocol to test the Most Affordable version of a car. This car was to offer marginal protection on the driver's chest, thighs, and foot areas, and the body shell was deemed incapable of handling for the crash. More to concerns as the child protection was rated only 2 Stars.

10) Maruti Suzuki Ertiga:-

The Second Gen Maruti Ertiga that comes in 10th places is the second car with only two 3 Star-rating. The MPV provides marginal protection for the driver's chest and passenger's knees and unstable footwell as some area of concern on this Maruti car. Global NACP  also rated the body structure as not capable of withstanding for the load. Ertiga which comes with ISOFIX child seat mounts as standard was rated 3 stars on child protection as it has inadequate head protection provided by the front-facing position on an 18-month child seat.
