BS-6 vs BS4 All you need to know

What is BS?

BS or Bharat stage is basically a set of rules and regulations that defines how much greenhouse gases or pollutants a vehicle can emit in the atmosphere with respect to the distance traveled by the vehicle. Bharat stage is derived from Euro emission which is implemented in European countries. These norms help in controlling the number of toxic gases like sulfur-di-oxide, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and other nitrate gases.

Difference between BS-4 and BS-6.

Well, the main difference between BS-4 and BS-6 petrol engines is the amount of nitrogen oxide which the engine releases in the atmosphere. In a BS -4 petrol engine, the amount was 80 mg/ km whereas in BS -6 engine the amount is 60 mg/km.

The major difference between BS-4 and BS-6 can be observed in Diesel engines. One can say that BS-6  norms are majorly for the diesel. There is a  major reduction in the emission of hydrocarbons (containing sulfur), PM or particulate matter ( black smoke due to improper combustion) and Nitrogen oxides by 43%, 68%, and 82% respectively.

Benefits and price difference

As we know the major reason behind implementation of BS-6 norms is the reduction of sulfur compounds from the atmosphere. Because when sulfur compounds enter the human body, it dissolves in the blood and causes multiplication of cell which is the initial stage of cancer.
But on the other hand, sulfur acts as a lubricant for diesel engines for better fuel efficiency and performance. So in place of sulfur, some additives will be used in the BS-6 fuel. Now you must be wondering whether there will be any change in the prices of fuel and BS-6 vehicles. Well, the answer is Yes, there will be an increase in the prices of fuel as well as vehicles.

Note:-  We can drive a BS-4, BS-3 or BS-2 vehicle on BS-6 fuel without any issues.
