Things one should always check before buying a used super bike.
All of us have always dreamed of riding a big Superbike since childhood. The aggressive looks, insane exhaust sound, and that muscular big bike feel all together bring our inner child to feel alive again. But not all of us can get our hands on a brand new machine because of financial problems or the fear of depreciation or we just want to get the taste of the bike for a particular time frame (6months or 1 year). Here comes and plays the used superbike market where we can get our dreams fulfilled without getting a big hole in our pockets. But we also need to know what we should check before buying a used motorcycle.
1) Stay away from Grey Market bikes:-
Grey Market bikes are those bikes that were imported illegally in India. This was done mostly before 2008 when there were no official dealers in India. At that time the import duty on a Completely Build Units or CBU was around 140% which means that if the cost you around 6 lakhs you have to pay 8 lakhs rupees to the government as import duty. To save their money the buyer used to import the bike in parts and then it was assembled. Now because the bike is imported in the form of parts it can't get registered so, a fake registration was done and because of that, the bike cannot be sold in the market. If the authority gets to know about that bike the owner has to pay all the import duty and the bike will be impounded.
2) Service History:-
3) Registration transfer:-
It is important to note that one should always transfer the bike under his/her name even if you are buying the bike for a short period of time. Because if you don't you can get yourself into legal problems. Just ask yourself what if the bike gets stolen or you met with an accident or worst case the person under whom the bike is registered file a case against you that you stole his bike. You can get into big trouble because you don't have anything legal document which states that you are the owner of that motorcycle. If you met with an accident then you won't be able to claim the insurance because you are not the rightful owner and you will have to pay all the bills and repairing a superbike is not at all cheap.
4) Tires:-
One of the most important things is to check the tires of the bike, they can look brand new but believe me you can get easily be fooled by them. Some of the dealers or brokers tend to used old tires it doesn't mean used tires but the tires which were manufactured before 2 or even more than 2 years. Now, the problem is that when a brand new tire is not used for this long the compound of that tire tends to harden with time. Tires of this age should not be used for high-speed riding because they will not provide adequate grip and in some cases, they can even burst which can lead to serious injuries. Also, these tires are relatively quiet cheap then a new tire that's why dealers used these tires.
5) Accessories:-
Another point where someone can fool you is the accessories especially exhaust systems. As we all know that there are many fake replica exhaust systems in the market which can be as cheap as Rs 5000. Now the problem with these exhausts is that they can harm the life of your engine. Companies like Akrapovic, SC project, Arrow do a lot of research in the development of there products with results in increasing the performance and mileage of your superbike and that is the only reason why they are so expensive. So, you need to have knowledge about that exhaust which if fitted in that motorcycle.
Things one should always check before buying a used super bike.
